Garage Storage for Scrap Wood
Just about everyone has a pile of scrap wood laying around somewhere. This is an important feature in any Handy Father’s garage. Not everyone has found a good solution to garage storage for scrap wood.
Keep scrap wood out of the way enabling everyday activities and easy access to commonly needed items. The organization of a garage is a key factor in its utility.
When I went about designing a simple storage solution for my scrap wood, I wanted to use some of the scrap wood to meet my need. It was poetic justice when I took scrap wood to solve my need of garage storage for scrap wood!
How to build garage storage for scrap wood
Like I mentioned above, I built my storage solution out of scrap wood.
I built two “L” shaped shelves and attached them to my garage wall to get storage for the scrap wood. I attached them up off the ground freeing up valuable floor space in my small, 1 car garage.
Each shelf is made from two 2×6’s, 1 cut at 18.5″ in length and the other at 20″, with a 45º angled 4×4 for support.
I attached the 2×6’s together with three nails, and arranged the wood so the top of the self is a single board (20″). See the diagram to the right and download the PDF schematic: garage storage for scrap wood.
I used scrap nails and a few screws to assemble the shelves.
I have the two shelves spaced apart enough to hold the majority of my scrap wood, but if I had longer wood, I’d have made a third shelf to better support greater lengths of wood.
Alternative option
There are suspended storage options for attaching to the walls and ceiling of a garage that would accommodate scrap wood.
There are all kinds of garage storage racks like the one pictured left.
